ARTIST STATEMENT

In the same way a stone seems still when thrown into the air and before it falls back to earth, a painting must be dynamic as it is still. I want my work to be neither illustrative nor symbolic: its impact must be immediate, or as Bacon says ‘it must be experienced through the nervous system’.

In the end, it is this simple: I expect from my paintings all those qualities which I imagine to desire in someone in whom I would fall in love: I want it to be intelligent, beautiful in its own manner, beautiful in its own way, charming and clever - though modest, clear, honest, straightforward and authentic with integrity. I know these are very high standards. I work towards them.

Wie ein Stein, den man in die Luft wirft, bevor er zurück auf die Erde fällt, muss ein Gemälde in seinem Stillstand lebendig sein. Ich will meine Malerei weder illustrativ noch symbolisch; sie soll - um mit Francis Bacon zu sprechen - "über das Nervensystem funktionieren".

Letztlich ist es ganz einfach: All die Eigenschaften, die mir einfallen, die ich mir bei einem Menschen wünsche in den ich mich verlieben könnte, die fordere ich auch von meinen Bildern: Ich will ihn intelligent, schön (auf seine Weise), charmant und geistreich (und dennoch bescheiden), klar, ehrlich, einfach und echt. Ein hoher Anspruch - ich arbeite daran.
